Monitoring and Responding to Technological Developments
Background
Brian Kelly was a member of the JISC Observatory team. The JISC Observatory sought to “systematise the way in which the JISC anticipates and responds to projected future trends and scenarios in the context of the use of technology in Higher & Further Education in the UK“. Brian was the lead author of a paper entitled “Reflecting on Yesterday, Understanding Today, Planning for Tomorrow” presented at the Umbrella 2013 conference which described the work of the JISC Observatory and the methodology it used.
Since the closure of the JISC Observatory Brian has delivered a number of workshops on approaches to monitoring technological developments and preparing for the implications of such developments. Recent workshops have included:
- Let’s Predict the Future!
A half-day workshop which attracted over 60 participants held at the 12th SAOIM (Southern African Online Information Meeting) conference held in Pretoria, South Africa on 3-6 June 2014. See the workshop details and resources. - Preparing For The Future:
Two 90 minute workshops held over two days given at the ELAG (European Library Automation Group) 2014 conference held at the University of Bath on 11-13 June 2014. The first session covered methodologies for predicting technology trends with the second session addressing institutional strategies for responding to the predictions. A half-day 90 minute workshop held at the University of Brighton for IT Services/Library staff as part of a series of staff development sessions. See the workshop details and resources.
